This is your second contribution to the Addict Guest Artist range, are you happy with your latest offering?
Yeah I’m happy with it. I like to think of it as a visual metaphor for anyone that gets to do something they love for a living…at times it can be a gamble, but when the good times roll, there’s nothing sweeter.
You seem to be able to pluck ideas from anywhere. How does Disco Teck go about coming up with his concepts? Is there a method to the madness or does it naturally come to you?
There’s definitely method to the madness, even if it is quite simple. You’ve got to be original. Artists that come from a graffiti background tend to start off in life painting pretty generic stuff (as I did!). A general rule I use now is, if it’s obvious, scrap it. Think outside the box. Also, when designing prints for tees, I like to create something that I would want to wear, and in turn hopefully it’s what someone else would wear too. Simple I know, but simple methods and concepts seem to work best for me.
What do you believe makes a good design for a tee?
Nice typography, clever illustration.
You’ve traveled the world through your work with Secret Wars, Monorex and Pirates. Which country stands out the most for you artistically?
I love Lisbon. For me it’s the new Barcelona. Some great artists out there (shouts to LEG crew!), great spots to paint, great beaches, hot chicks, and good party vibes. Such a great city, I really want to spend some more time there.
As a young artist, you’ve managed to achieve so much, what do you pin your success on and what else is left for you to conquer?
Well, I wouldn’t say that. I still feel like I’m just getting started.
You’ve also put something together for the upcoming Boc 28 series. How was it putting your spin on the popular Mickey character?
That was good fun actually. It’s an honour to be given the chance to remix such an iconic character for a tee design. My design is definitely a very personal piece, reflecting what Mickey Mouse means to me. I’m sure there will be plenty of others from my generation that will be able to relate to it too.
At this very moment in time, who inspires you?
Maggie D. My Nan. She’s an amazing artist who inspired me to paint and draw from a very early age, and still inspires me today. She paints quite abstract stuff these days in her little studio in the garden and has even started having a go with spray paint. Hearing her talk about what caps she likes using is awesome.
Do you have any plans to follow on from your first successful solo show with another?
I wouldn’t say my first show was that successful, but definitely a worthwhile experience…being put under pressure to do something like that is not a good way to work, but you learn a lot. I’ve done a few small group shows since then. I’m taking time to work on some new pieces but it’s a lengthy process and I don’t want to rush it…
